The Momentum Preview - Manchester United v Sunderland

After 11 points from six fixtures, Sunderland are on one of the best opening runs for a promoted side in Premier League history, and look to build upon that feat on the road against Manchester United.

Sunderland vanquished Europa League side Nottingham Forest last weekend, thanks to Omar Alderete’s back post header squeezing past Mats Sels from a Granit Xhaka free kick, and now sit sixth in the Premier League table heading into Gameweek Seven.

Regis Le Bris addressed the media during his Thusday press briefing, and provided no squad updates for this weekend's match.

Lineup Prediction

My Sunderland lineup prediction.

I predict ‘If it ain't broke, don't fix it’ will come into play in this weekend’s squad, with the same Starting XI walking out onto the pitch at Old Trafford.

The Opposition

How Manchester United lined up against Brentford.

Manchester United have had a turbulent time of late. From the outside looking in, they seem to have a squad of individual talents, who just can't figure out how to make it click consistently. That by no means suggests they are a pushover, with Old Trafford remaining one of the more intimidating grounds in football.

Ruben Amorim, with his head perhaps on the chopping block, will be desperate for a result to appease the unforgiving Mancunians in the stands and behind their TVs, so I expect a quick start from the home side. Look out for their new signings, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha, to be their foremost attacking threats, either from the starting lineup or the bench.

I predict Sunderland will earn a spirited draw, with new signing Brian Brobbey scoring a late equaliser to hush the Red Devils.

Newly promoted Sunderland held their weight against continental competition, earning a point away at Crystal Palace by grinding out a 0-0 draw. As I alluded to in The Momentum Preview, both sides like to sit back and play on the counter-attack. Sunderland assumed that role in the match, finishing with 44% possession while allowing 14 Palace shots, six of which on target and requiring attention from the Dutch shot-stopper Robin Roefs, of whom made spectacular save after save, denying the home si
